Do I need any special hardware?

No. Replica is a software based solution.

Depending on your existing equipment and organisational structure there may be a need to purchase a server. However when compared to traditional disk based solutions the hardware requirements are quite modest and often an order of magnitude lower than then alternative solutions.

Do I need server software to setup a Replica server?

No. Replica does not require special server software such as Windows 2003/2000/NT server.

Replica server can be setup on a machine running Windows XP Professional; however there is a Microsoft hard limit of 10 connections for an XP professional machine.

What are the minimum requirements for the server?

The requirements for the backup server depend on the number of clients the server will be servicing.

If you are backing up a small workgroup, a workstation running XP Professional should provide excellent performance.

On a large corporate network, a larger server running Windows Server 2003 would be more appropriate.

The backup server must be one of the following: Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP4), XP Pro (SP1, SP2), Server 2003 (SP1), and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (SP1) (64 bit, Supports Intel Itanium 2, Intel Extended Memory EM64T, and AMD Opteron processors.

What are the minimum requirements for the workstations?

The workstations must be running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP with the latest service packs installed. The Workstation itself would need a minimum of 512MB ram and a Pentium III 1GHz processor or greater.

What are the minimum requirements for the laptops?

The laptop must be running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP with the latest service packs installed. The Laptop itself would need a minimum of 512MB ram and a Pentium III 1GHz processor equivalent or greater. The laptop will also need to be able to communicate periodically to the Offsite database so some form of internet/LAN connection will be needed.
